ABOUT STONE ISLAND

Research. Form. Function.

Founded on a culture of experimentation, Stone Island is known for extraordinary technical innovation, a commitment to challenging the possibilities of materials, and a genuine connection between the maker and the wearer. It is a fusion between the two poles of research and function. A relentless exploration of the new, applied with intention to create garments with purpose and utility. Its manifesto is unwavering, guided by a dual commitment to LAB and LIFE. LAB refers to a boundless and ever-evolving pursuit of invention. The transformation of fibres and fabrics, enabling the discovery of materials, processes and techniques that have never previously been used in the clothing industry. LIFE is a belief in the significance of experience, connection, and community. The application of design to real life, where the function of the garment is never just aesthetic. These twin poles steer every element of Stone Island's creative and cultural footprint, and have established the brand at the vanguard of experimentation, design, and culture.

01 HISTORY

Stone Island was born from a fabric. In 1982, Italian designer Massimo Osti created Tela Stella, a heavy wash, resin-printed military grade canvas that seemed an unlikely material for clothing, but provided both a distinctive appearance and enhanced durability. The Stone Island name was chosen in homage to the nautical novels of Joseph Conrad, while a badge featuring a compass insignia was added to the first Tela Stella jacket to represent both the heritage of the fabric and the forward-facing direction of the brand.

In 1983, Carlo Rivetti joined Stone Island, bringing with him a philosophy that emphasised the relationship between function, innovation, and community. Witnessing the growing casualwear revolution in menswear, he developed a vision for a clothing brand that responded to the changing needs of a new generation, and formed a creative partnership with Osti.

Working together, they set out to challenge the limitations of materials both natural and technical, and in the process created entirely new fabrications. They grew a brand at the cutting edge of technological achievement, grounded by a dedication to utility: clothes that adapt to their environment for use by real people, in the real world. That spirit of experimentation, which extends from research to development, from design into culture, became embedded in Stone Island’s DNA and propelled the brand to the forefront of the Italian fashion industry.

Over a decade of boundary-pushing work, the brand developed techniques, treatments and proprietary fabrics that set it apart from any other. Its most famous garments - the Raso Gommato, in 1984; the Ice Jacket, in 1989; and the Reflective Jacket, in 1992 - became icons of design in their own right. The brand's unparalleled capability for garment dyeing, with over 60,000 recipes, has allowed it to create true alchemy with colour, offering an extraordinary spectrum of shades in each collection.

Following Osti's departure in 1994, the English designer Paul Harvey joined Stone Island in 1996, drawn to the ethos and principles of the brand, and bringing his own creative vision to its story, including such innovations as the Metal Shell Bronze, in 1999; the Raso Gommato Reverse Colour Process, in 1998; and the Compact Jacket, in 2003. Harvey led the design team until 2008, when Carlo Rivetti assumed the role of Creative Director.

Under Rivetti's stewardship, Stone Island evolved and expanded in its ambitions, attracting collaborative partnerships with some of the most dynamic and progressive designers, including Errolson Hugh and Aitor Throup. That same spirit of experimentation, excellence, and obsession with product drives the design team at Stone Island today.

Crossing subcultures and generations, the members of Stone Island's community share in its unique spirit, and uphold its reputation as one of the most forward-thinking companies in the world.

That spirit has never faltered; it is the same spirit that drives it today.

02 FAMIGLIA_The Compass Inside

The Stone Island compass badge was created in 1982, as a symbol of exploration and connection. To wear the badge is to wear an emblem of belonging, a means of instantly connecting across cultural lines. Community is at the very heart of Stone Island: since its earliest days, in the partnership between Massimo Osti and Carlo Rivetti, it has depended on the value of collaboration and connection. The result is a brand with experimentation at its core: one that that gives its creators the freedom to try, to adapt and to evolve. As it has grown, its values have endured: a belief in longevity over novelty, purity over ostentation, and utility over artifice. Those values have taken hold with subcultures across the world, finding followers in music, arts, sports, and in real life. 'Community as a Form of Research', launched in 2024, celebrates and pays tribute to the subcultures that make up the global Stone Island community, championing the real followers, collectors, friends, and family of the brand. Stone Island Sound, first launched in 2020, was expanded in 2024 to explore the brand's cultural roots, and its authentic connection to musical subcultures worldwide.

03 VALUES

SELF-RELIANCE:

With the compass as our emblem, we chart our own course, striving to please only those who share our values. In doing so, we rise to a challenge only we can set ourselves: to push the very boundaries of research and technology.

ENGINEERING MINDSET:

Our focus, now and always, is on producing objects that provide real utility: garments that meet the needs of the people who wear them.

SOLIDARITY:

We were built on the principles of community, collaboration, and partnership. They remain at the heart of everything we do: an authentic commitment to the value of shared experience.

MATERIAL OBSESSION:

Weight. Gravity. Grain. Texture. Material innovation is at the very centre of our process: in short, we create what has never been created before.

Together, these values define Stone Island's identity, positioning the brand at the convergence of research, community, and purpose.
